During the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 State Fair of Texas, State Fair President Mitchell Glieber surprised everyone by awarding the Dallas Police Department with a bronze statue resembling Big Tex from the State Fair called the Pride of Texas Award.
Glieber explained during the ceremony, that the State Fair team was inspired to begin this new tradition following the tragedies of the July 7th ambush and felt the Dallas Police Department had definitely earned the right to be called the “Pride of Texas.”
”People from across the country were moved by the grace with which Chief Brown and the entire department performed their duties this summer under some of the most difficult of circumstances,” said Glieber. “This award will continue be presented each year to an individual or group that has demonstrated the qualities that Texans are best known for: strength, friendliness, hard-working, courageous and perhaps most of all, pride.”
Chief David Brown was one of the guest speakers and ribbon cutters for this year’s Opening Ceremony, and accepted the award on behalf of the entire Dallas Police Department. Glieber encouraged fairgoers to stop and thank officers throughout the fairgrounds for the great work they do in the Dallas community and at the Fair.
The 2016 State Fair of Texas runs through Sunday, October 23rd in Fair Park.
