In honor of the 2023 State Fair of Texas theme, “Explore the Midway,” we are highlighting concessionaires located on the Midway where all fairgoers can satisfy their deep-fried cravings. Whether you follow a gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan diet, the State Fair of Texas has several options to choose from. After you’re done spinning out on the Love Bug or riding round and round on the Dentzel Carousel, here are eight concession stands you can stop by to grab a small bite — or a whole meal!
#1 – Barrera’s: We’re kicking off this list with the perfect combination of fried and sweet, Barrera’s. Here, fairgoers following a vegetarian diet can get Fried Oreos® and Nutter Butters®. Vegans looking to mix sour and sweet can enjoy a fresh, juicy Kool-Aid® pickle.
#2 – Bert’s: While burgers from Bert’s have earned their claim to fame, vegetarians will be happy to know that there are several options to choose from. This ranges from Texas Fried Pecan Pie drizzled in caramel and candied pecans, to a buttery and savory grilled cheese sandwich.
#3 – Dippin’ Dots Ice Cream®: Everyone can enjoy Dippin’ Dots® at the Fair. Not only are they vegan, but also gluten-free. Enjoy fair-themed flavors, such as cotton candy, perfect to enjoy on the Midway, or a classic, like cookies and cream.
#4 – Fletcher’s: Vegetarian fairgoers won’t miss out on this State Fair of Texas staple, Fletcher’s Corny Dogs! All stands, including the one on the Midway, offer a Veggie Corny Dog made of a plant-based protein.
#5 – Fruteria Cano: Need a refreshing Fair treat? Fruteria Cano has a location on the Midway where you can grab an assortment of fresh fruit. This booth also offers gluten-free fruit drinks and a mouth-watering piña colada smoothie.
#6 – Newport’s: From several ice cream choices to beat the Texas heat, to classic football bites ideal for the Allstate Red River Rivalry, this one-stop shop is PERFECT for any gluten-free fairgoer. This vendor can be found on the Funway, along with other locations across the fairgrounds.
#7 – Sweet Connie’s Midway Grill: Not only does this vendor have several adult beverages for vegetarian fairgoers to enjoy, but some may be surprised to know that their infamous Deep Fried Reese’s® n Cream is also vegetarian.
#8 – Velasquez Catering and Concessions Inc.: Guests who are vegetarian needing to satisfy their cheesy fix, step right up! Velasquez Catering has multiple booths across the grounds, including one located on the Midway, where you can grab a boat of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos® nachos and plain nachos. You can also enjoy fresh popped kettle corn.
We want all fairgoers to enjoy one of the greatest parts of the Fair, the food! While the list above is just a fraction of gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options offered at the Most Texan Place on Earth, you can email info@bigtex.com or visit the closest hospitality center if you have questions on any specific foods across the fairgrounds that are catching your eye. Before purchasing the delectable dish of your choosing, please ensure you ask the concessionaire prior to food preparation that your purchase is up to your dietary restriction standards. The State Fair of Texas themed “Explore the Midway” runs September 29 through October 22. Visit BigTex.com for more information.
