Opening just in time for the 2017 Fair, the new Briscoe Carpenter Livestock Center is a 55,000-square-foot facility that provides an awesome space for the Fair to host agricultural education programs. The multipurpose facility will attract new shows, meetings, events, and conventions to Fair Park throughout the year, as well as expand the scope of livestock and agriculture activities during the Fair. With the goal of growing educational programs both during the Fair and throughout the year, the new facility provides more opportunities for hardworking 4-H and FFA students around the state of Texas.
So just what will be going on in a 55,000 square foot building during the Fair? One of the most important and exciting days on the State Fair calendar is the annual Youth Livestock Auction. 4-H and FFA students who earn top honors in their classes are rewarded with the opportunity to sell their livestock animals for premium prices at a live auction supported by local businesses and individuals who believe in these young Texans. In 2016, animals raised by students brought in over $1.4 million, and the Grand Champion Steer sold for a record-breaking $131,000. We’re excited to host the annual event this year in the new BCLC on Friday, October 6 at 1 p.m.
As for fairgoers who want to learn more about agriculture and its significance in our everyday lives, the “I Spy Texas” exhibit will be housed in the foyer of the Briscoe Carpenter Livestock Center. “I Spy Texas” debuted at the 2016 Fair and returns this year at an all-new location. The interactive exhibit takes fairgoers on a road trip of Texas, allowing them to tour each region of the Lone Star State and learn about the natural resources and wildlife native to each area. It’s a great exhibit for kids, and the parents will love the air conditioning!
In continuing the education of agriculture and its significance in our everyday lives, fairgoers can head on up to the second floor of the BCLC, where you will see the Texas Heritage Hall of Honor. This program was established in 1992 as a biennial program that recognizes men and women who have made a significant contribution to the agricultural heritage of Texas.
The Briscoe Carpenter Livestock Center is located just inside the Pan Am Gate. It is a new home for a building with a legacy as big as Texas! We hope you enjoy your visit to the new addition to Fair Park. Be sure to tag us in your selfies in front of the Briscoe Carpenter Livestock Center!
