In 2009, a new fried tasty creation was crowned top honors at the annual Big Tex Choice Awards. Fernie’s Deep Fried Peaches and Cream was deemed ‘best taste’ and became an instant fair classic.
Christi Erpillo has been a finalist in the past nine out of 11 competitions. Hers is a State Fair of Texas family, having been concessionaires for almost five decades. Her mom brought Fernie’s Funnel Cake to the Fair in 1981. It was Erpillo who introduced the Choice Award-winning Fernie’s Deep Fried Peaches and Cream that have remained a Fair staple since the 2009 win.
Her 2009 creation was described as “Sweet juicy peaches coated in a delicious batter of cinnamon, ginger, coconut, graham cracker crumbs, eggs & milk, then deep fried to a crunchy golden brown on the outside, while luscious and sweet on the inside. Served on a plate drizzled with raspberry sauce, lightly dusted with powdered sugar and topped with a cool dollop of whipped cream. A side of vanilla butter cream icing is provided for dipping”, most folks just call it delicious.
We’ve confirmed that Fernie’s Deep Fried Peaches and Cream will indeed be returning for the 2016 Fair! We can’t want to treat our taste buds to this classic.
