The State Fair of Texas’ highly regarded reputation for food speaks for itself. And now, a new twist on that popular topic. Winner of the Fair’s 2013 Great American SPAM® Championship took our local ribbon and ran with it to claim national award honors and an all-expenses paid trip for two to SPAM JAM® Waikiki in Honolulu.
Sheila Doucet of Richland Hills, a first time entrant in 2013, won a blue ribbon and $150 for her Philly Dilly SPAM® sandwich at the State Fair of Texas last October. On March 12, 2014 her recipe was announced as the grand prize winner. Doucet ultimately won out of 650 entries combined from 26 fairs across the country.
Doucet’s creation unites grilled bell peppers and onions over sautéed slices of SPAM Less Sodium, all topped with American and provolone cheeses. It is served on toasted French bread with dill veggie dip. The recipe can be found here.
The State Fair of Texas Creative Arts department first played host to the official SPAM recipe contest in 1990. In 2013, 24 recipes vied for top honors in the adult SPAM contest and 15 entries were submitted for the SPAM Kid Chef event.
The State Fair of Texas celebrates all things Texan by promoting agriculture, education, and community involvement through quality entertainment in a family-friendly environment. The 2014 exposition runs September 26 through October 19 in Fair Park.
