New World Screwworm (NWS): What Exhibitors Need to Know

New World Screwworm (NWS) has been detected in parts of Texas, and the State Fair of Texas Livestock Department has been closely monitoring the situation and preparing for potential impacts. We are continuing to plan for this fall’s show and will keep exhibitors informed as additional guidance becomes available. This page provides information about animal movement requirements that may apply to your animals, along with resources to help you find the most current, official guidance before you travel.

What Is New World Screwworm?

New World Screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae can infest wounds in warm-blooded animals. It is a livestock health and parasite-management issue — it is not a food safety issue, and USDA has confirmed the food supply is unaffected. State and federal animal health officials are actively monitoring and responding to detections across Texas.

Do I Need to Do Anything Before I Travel?

It depends on where your animal is coming from and its species. Texas A&M AgriLife has built an official tool that gives you guidance specific to your situation — use it before you load your animals.
1. Visit the New World Screwworm Livestock Movement Guide (link below).
2. Select Exhibition/Show Livestock.
3. Select your species.
4. Follow the prompts for your animal’s location and movement.
5. Review the requirements for movement to the Fair and returning home.
6. Download or save the guidance for your records.

General Guidance By Zone Status

TAHC’s current movement rules for exhibition and show livestock:

Non-Infested Zone

What’s required: No NWS-specific requirements. Standard animal health movement rules apply.

Infested Zone

What’s required: Animals must be officially identified, inspected, and issued a 14-day movement certificate. Animals may move to or from an infested zone if they return to their premise of origin within 14 days of inspection, or are slaughtered within that window.

This is general guidance; always confirm your specific requirements using the movement guide above, since rules are tied to your exact location and species and can change as the response evolves while consulting your local veterinarian.

What to Expect at the Fair

• Animals arriving from a designated infested or adjacent zone will need to check in with the appropriate documentation and animal movement requirements.
• Livestock Department staff are on hand throughout the fair to help with any questions about your animal’s status.
