Hey y’all! Jessie from the Big Tex team here with a few things to say!
First off, howdy and welcome! You’ll be hearing from me quite a bit as we begin this new chapter of fun with the Creative Texans Newsletter. I’m excited to share that we’ll be posting DIY blogs, crafty tips from State Fair pros, all your favorite delicious recipes, important reminders, and much more. To kickoff this newsletter, we’re sharing some exciting news.
All of our BIG Fair fans out there know our State Fair of Texas theme reveal is right around the corner. For our folks who don’t know, our team typically announces the upcoming Fair’s theme around one of the most important days for us Texans, Texas Independence Day. This holiday is March 2nd, which means we’re only a few weeks away from announcing the 2019 theme. Though I may be a little biased, this year’s theme might be my absolute favorite…
As soon as the theme is announced on our social media channels (@StateFairofTX, #BigTex), the race is on! We know many of y’all use the theme for inspiration when designing your Creative Arts entries, so we wanted to share a few reminders on some of the Arts & Crafts categories.
I’m starting off with my favorite category- photography. Get creative with those photos! Did you know one of the categories for the photography contest is State Fair- themed photos? Dig through your 2018 Fair photos, find your favorite, and enter it. We LOVE to see the Fair through your eyes! Speaking of sharing photos, don’t forget to share your #StateFairofTX pictures with us – who knows, we just might repost one to our social media channels.
Another top contender for my favorite Arts & Crafts category is Department L, Scale Models. This contest has several classes to enter, from aircraft kits to shoe box parade floats, to Lego models and State Fair- themed dioramas, there’s bound to be something for you. Not to mention, this contest department also has junior’s and children divisions. Ask your kiddo something they’d want to design and let their creativity soar! Check out this scale model from the children division – a 2018 State Fair of Texas Blue Ribbon Winner!
The last contest I want to highlight is Department G, Holiday Corner. What better way to get involved in Creative Arts contests than to celebrate with your favorite holiday? With three classes and 45 categories, the holiday spirit is endless! Needing some inspiration? Stay tuned, we have more fun holiday decorating tips to come. In the meantime, decide which holiday is your absolute fav!
Though these are just a few of the contests, there are thousands more. Literally thousands! As I mentioned our theme reveal is right around the corner and in addition to that exciting announcement, the Creative Arts Handbook will be released shortly after. The Handbook is home to everything you need to know about entering a Creative Arts Contests. It lists out all the categories, classes, and divisions. See below for the complete list of Arts & Crafts (pre-Fair) contests:
- Dept. A: Fine Art
- Dept. B: Ceramics and Hand-Painted China
- Dept. C: Designer Craftsman
- Dept. D: Dolls
- Dept. E: Canning

- Dept. H: Needlepoint, Crewel, and Counted Cross Stitch
- Dept. I: Needlework and Sewing

To wrap it up, not everyone can call themselves a State Fair of Texas ribbon winner, but the only way to become one is to enter! Are you ready to accept the challenge? It’s time to saddle up and get your Texas creative hats on. Y’all get ready for a fun year and an exciting theme reveal. You just never know how creative #BigTex might be.
