Every year, 10 sweet and savory foods are chosen as finalists for the Big Tex Choice Awards and are sought out by fairgoers. While these delicious dishes can make anyone’s mouth water, what if you’re on a diet? Well don’t worry, (ahem: Mayor Johnson), we’ve got you covered. No need to take a “cheat day” to enjoy the tasty food at the Fair!
For those following the Keto diet, make sure to stop by Yoakum Packing Co. on Nimitz Drive or near Cotton Bowl Plaza for some delicious BBQ pork ribs, smoked brisket, and sausage. For handheld or snack options try their beef jerky or chicken on a stick. You can also head over to Smokey John’s BBQ in the Tower Building for tasty turkey legs and sausage on a stick. Also be sure to make your way over to La Huasteca for a mango on a stick or Lemon Chill for some frozen bananas.
If your trip to the State Fair happens to be during your Whole 30 diet, look no further than Shrimp Doc for an appetizing blackened shrimp baked potato – just be sure to ask for no butter, sour cream, or cheese. You can also head to Pearlies Southern Kitchen for smoked turkey and collard greens to fill you up. Whole 30 participants can also stop by Smokey John’s BBQ for a turkey leg as well as La Huasteca for a mango on a stick or Lemon Chill for some frozen bananas.
