As the registration deadline quickly approaches (mail in- July 19 or online- August 2), we’re highlighting some of our favorite Arts & Crafts (pre-Fair) contests that don’t always get the attention they deserve. These are certainly unique departments, but you’re bound to find something that sparks your creativity no matter your craft of choice.
First up: Department L: Scale Models – it’s more than what meets the eye. Yes, you can enter assembled kits of aircrafts and vehicles, but how about the “Scratch Build- Parade Floats” category or the “Lego assemblies?” Some of our favorite entries are the parade floats and buildings you folks come up with – y’alls creativity never ceases to amaze us!
This department has divisions for adults, juniors, and kids, so why not get the whole family working on their own entry as a summer project? This is a great opportunity to let your little builders and designers express their creativity with Lego blocks or a one-of-a-kind shoe box parade float! You don’t have to complete the entry before the registration deadline, just be sure to finish mail-in registration before July 19 or online registration by August 2.
Second, Department F: Hobby Collections has two main classes: “Collections” and “Antiques.” Though you are not able to bring your entire collection of memorabilia, we’ve defined this class as two items that are 30 years or older; our antique division is one single item, aged 100 years or older. “Collections” can include items such as belt buckles, tins, or clocks. “Antiques” can include items such as apparel, silver, or figurines. For a complete list of categories, download our Creative Arts Handbook and locate the Hobby Collections section on page 30.
Lastly, we’d like to highlight Department D: Dolls. From handcrafted dolls to bears and even doll houses, this contest is an easy one for first-timers or to test the waters of a new category. Adult and junior divisions are combined in this contest, but your kiddos also have time to shine! The child division has these categories listed below:
- Dolls (1930 to Present-Day)
- International, in Costume
- Baby Doll
- Bears
- American Girl type
- Handcrafted by Exhibitor
While this is just a few of our Arts & Crafts (pre-Fair) contests, there is a FAIR-ly large amount of opportunity to become a Creative Arts ribbon winner! All you have to do is register online before August 2, mail or bring in your item, and see where the State Fair takes you!
