To get the surrounding area into the Big Tex spirit, the State Fair holds a special Creative Arts cooking competition the Sunday before opening day. The chili and barbecue contests are perfect for amateur kings of the smoker or for those looking to gain CASI points for a trip to Terlingua’s International Chili Championship.
The State Fair has been chosen again to hold an IDOS Dutch oven cook-off. Participants in the contest will prepare and cook a main dish, dessert and bread in a Dutch oven. Competitors must use charcoal only.
First place winners in each of the chili and BBQ cook-off categories will receive a $100 prize and a Big Tex trophy. Even better, all chili and barbecue cooks will receive a one-day fair pass and a one-day parking pass to the 2016 State Fair of Texas, to be used any day except Saturday, October 8, 2016.
Pre-registration for the cook-off is highly requested, but entries are accepted day-of. The 2016 chili, barbecue and Dutch oven cook-off will be held Sunday, September 25, 2016.
