New members to be inducted into Texas Heritage Hall of Honor in 2008

The fabric of Texas history contains many threads - political, social, military and economic - but none so basic, none so enduring as the story of the land itself. The Texas Heritage Hall of Honor recognizes men and women who have made significant contributions to the agricultural heritage of Texas.

Joining the distinguished body of 49 prominent Texans this year will be the following: Longtime head of the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, the late Dr. O. D. Butler, Jr.; the late J. Walter Hammond, known as the "Father of the Texas Farm Bureau"; "Prince of the Pines" and two-term member of the state legislature, the late John H. Kirby; rancher, banker, and board of regents chair of both the Texas State University System and the University of Texas System, James L. Powell; and 13-term U.S. Rep. and ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee, Charles W. Stenholm.

The program was established in 1992 as a biennial program. Every two years, nominees - living and deceased - are considered for induction.
